Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political party coalitions have become increasingly significant in Nigeria, especially in local elections, as they allow smaller parties to consolidate their power and resources in order to challenge dominant political forces. Jalingo LGA in Taraba State presents a notable case for examining how political party coalitions impact voter preferences. In a context where ethnic and regional affiliations often shape political behavior, party coalitions are seen as a strategy to increase the chances of electoral success by broadening the appeal of candidates. Coalitions bring together diverse groups with varying interests, ideologies, and regional identities, but their impact on voter preferences is not always straightforward (Ibrahim, 2024).
In Jalingo LGA, political party coalitions have the potential to shift voter preferences by promoting a unified front against dominant parties, but they may also create challenges related to ideological inconsistency, distrust, or the prioritization of narrow interests over public welfare. This study aims to evaluate how political party coalitions influence the voting decisions of the electorate in Jalingo LGA, examining whether coalitions increase voter turnout, change party loyalty, or introduce new political dynamics that enhance democratic engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing role of political party coalitions in Jalingo LGA, there is limited research on how they directly influence voter preferences in local elections. The key issue is whether coalitions lead to more inclusive political processes or simply result in temporary alignments that do not address the long-term needs of the electorate. This study seeks to examine the relationship between party coalitions and voter preferences in Jalingo LGA, focusing on how coalitions impact voter loyalty, political engagement, and election outcomes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of political party coalitions on voter preferences in Jalingo LGA.
2. To assess whether political party coalitions affect voter turnout and participation in elections in Jalingo LGA.
3. To explore how political party coalitions influence the political alignment and loyalty of voters in Jalingo LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How do political party coalitions impact voter preferences in Jalingo LGA?
2. What role do political party coalitions play in increasing voter turnout and participation in Jalingo LGA?
3. How do political party coalitions influence voter loyalty and political alignment in Jalingo LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Political party coalitions significantly influence voter preferences in Jalingo LGA.
2. Political party coalitions lead to an increase in voter turnout and participation in elections in Jalingo LGA.
3. Political party coalitions affect voter loyalty and political alignment in Jalingo LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a comprehensive understanding of how political party coalitions influence electoral outcomes in local governance. By examining the specific case of Jalingo LGA, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on the role of coalitions in enhancing democratic processes in Nigeria, especially at the grassroots level. The findings will offer useful insights for political parties, electoral commissions, and civil society organizations interested in improving voter engagement and the quality of political representation.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Jalingo LGA, assessing the impact of political party coalitions on voter preferences in local elections. It will not address the broader implications of coalitions at the state or national levels. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data on voter preferences and potential biases in survey responses from politically active individuals.
